KKR's first loss of IPL 2024

“The wicket changed after the powerplay,” Shreyas Iyer says in his analysis of KKR’s opening IPL 2024 defeat.

KKR failed to make an impression in their match in Chennai, managing just 137 runs in their innings and losing by seven wickets in the end.

The Indian Premier League’s Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) suffered their first-ever loss in an unexpected turn of events. Captain Shreyas Iyer blamed the loss on the difficult Chennai surface.

KKR found it difficult to make an impression in their match on April 8th at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. They managed to score just 137 runs in their innings and lost by a final of seven wickets. Iyer blamed their poor performance in part on the unpredictability of the Chepauk pitch in a statement released after the game.

“We had a fantastic powerplay start, but we dropped wickets one after the other. After the powerplay, we were unable to swiftly assess the situation, and scoring runs wasn’t simple. Knowing the conditions rather well, they (CSK) bowled in accordance with their plans. Following them from the first ball wasn’t simple. After the game, Shreyas Iyer spoke with the broadcaster, “We were trying to construct the innings, but it didn’t fall in place according to the plan.”

As KKR’s bowlers failed to hold on to their small total, CSK easily defeated the target in 17.4 overs to secure a resounding victory.

Although we believed that 160–170 was a decent score, we lost steam.: Iyer

The most notable player was all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja of CSK, who claimed three vital wickets for just eighteen runs. Along with Mustafizur Rahman and Tushar Deshpande, his potent bowling destroyed KKR’s batting order.

“The powerplay caused a change in the wicket. We felt that 160–170 was a decent result because we were in a comfortable position, but we lost steam. We must start over from scratch and apply what we have learned. I’m relieved that this occurred early in the competition. We are very familiar with the conditions back home when we return. Iyer continued, “We must analyze the circumstances and make the most of them.

Despite the loss, KKR is still in the lead in the league table, even though their winning streak has ended. The team’s priorities as they reorganize for future games will be to improve their batting problems and adjust to new pitch conditions.
