April 18 – 1st ODI
Matthews’s all-around performance helps WI win easily.
Hayley Matthews’s flawless century of 150 balls, the best score in an ODI by a West Indian woman and the highest against Pakistan, set the stage for her team’s easy 113-run victory in the opening ODI on Thursday at the National Stadium in Karachi.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat, the West Indian opener crushed her opponents with 15 boundaries and a six. Her team finished with 269 for 8. The cornerstone of the West Indies innings was built by Matthews and Shemaine Campbelle (45), who shared a 102-run partnership for the second wicket. Leggie Tuba Hassan struck twice in quick succession to remove Campbelle and Stafanie Taylor, but Matthews stabilized the innings with the help of Chenille Henry, Aaliyah Alleyene, and Chedean Nation, all three of whom made insignificant contributions.
With wickets falling quickly after the departure of their top run scorer in the current ODI Championship cycle, Sidra Ameen, in the second over, Pakistan was never able to really threaten the West Indies’ total. After hitting a brace with the ball, Tuba topped the score with the bat, batting a quick twenty-five. In less than 36 overs, Matthews claimed three wickets with the ball to help the hosts be reduced to 156.
Brief Scores: Pakistan scored 156 in 35.5 overs (Tuba Hassan 25, Muneeba Ali 22, Hayley Matthews 3-17, Zaida James 2-14) lost to West Indies 269/8 in 50 overs (Hayley Matthews 140*, Shemaine Campbelle 45; Sadia Iqbal 2-38, Tuba Hassan 2-48) by 113 runs.
