For breaking the IPL Code of Conduct on April 21 (Sunday) during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, Virat Kohli has been fined 50% of his match money.
After venting his resentment at the umpire during the match and expressing his anger over his removal during RCB’s chase, Kohli has been punished. Harshit Rana bowled him after deeming him caught, even though he believed it was a waist-high no-ball. The ball would have dipped below the waist if Kohli had been batting from his crease, according to the third umpire’s analysis of ball tracking technology, which this season also accounts for player heights.
Rule 41.7 of the ICC regulations states that a delivery is considered unfair regardless of whether it is likely to cause the striker physical harm. Any delivery that passes or would have passed, without pitching, beyond waist height of the striker standing upright at the popping crease. If the bowler makes a delivery of that kind, the umpire has to call and indicate no ball right away.
To Kohli’s chagrin, the third umpire thus maintained the onfield ruling. The RCB opener was venting his frustration to the umpire as he was leaving.
