Bangladesh begin preparatory camp

Concentrate on Parvez as Bangladesh kicks off training

Can Parvez Hossain Emon take advantage of this chance? The left-handed hitter who bats in the top order, the Dhaka Premier League, is the country’s traditional list A event, so it is not surprising that he is one of the 17 players selected for the three-day preparatory camp in Chattogram.

Parvez appeared to be batting in a different zone as he amassed 623 runs in 13 games with three hundreds so far in the competition. Parvez made his debut in the Twenty20 Internationals in August 2022 before being abandoned aside from playing two more matches in the Asian Games. He was called up to the camp, where, in advance of the five-match series against Zimbabwe, head coach Chandika Hathurusingha would watch his players react in various match scenarios during three practice sessions.

The series is anticipated to serve as Bangladesh’s practice for the next ICC T20 World Cup. Since the team management is committed to sticking with the players they have selected for the training camp, there won’t likely be any major surprises during the international tournament.

The only people missing from the camp are Mustafizur Rahman and Shakib Al Hasan. The latter is anticipated to join the team after finishing his duty in the ongoing Indian Premier League for Chennai Super Kings, which is set to conclude after their game against Punjab Kings on May 1. The former captain is currently in the United States with his family.

Although the selection of opener Parvez does not draw much attention, the exclusion of Muhammad Naim Sheikh, Anamul Haque, Taijul Islam, and Aliss Al Islam—all of whom were involved in the three-match Twenty20 International Series against Sri Lanka last February—raises serious concerns.

In the DPL, Anamul and Naim both scored well: the former amassed 370 runs in ten games, while the latter amassed 502 runs in twelve games, including a century.

On request for anonymity, a member of the team management stated, “We want our head coach (Hathurusingha) to see what Emon (Parvez) can offer and whether he can earn his trust because he really batted aggressively in the DPL and seemed to be having all the elements to be successful in the shortest format.”

The coach’s panel members think highly of Tanjid Tamim’s cricketing ability, despite the fact that he hasn’t yet made his T20I debut. “We already have four openers with Liton (Das), Tanzid Tamim, Soumya Sarkar, and Emon, and from them there is expected to be three openers in the squad while one will remain as back-up in case any opener is injured he can come into play,” he said.

“We are not considering Anamul in the shortest format at the moment and it is not a fact Naim is out of contention but we feel we need to see Parvez.”

The squad manager also emphasized that Taijul has not been included because they wish to safeguard him for the next Tests. “Look, Taijul was injured during the Test series against Sri Lanka and recovered recently and played a game in DPL but we don’t want to risk him by including him in T20Is as we don’t have his alternative in Test cricket but in T20 we can go for other options like Tanveer,” he stated.

“As for Aliss he is yet to recover fully because if he was fit he was a prime contender for a spot in T20Is considering he is a mystery spinner but we are not sure when he will get full fitness,” he continued.

It’s claimed that team management also intends to limit Mehedy Hasan’s usage in the shorter format because they believe it will hinder his bowling in Tests, where they will need him more because they have Sheikh Mahedi as a backup off-spin option.
