The Orange Cap is a prestigious award for IPL batters. It is an accolade presented to the player who scores the most runs in that season’s Indian Premier League.
IPL Orange Cap Trivia
- Shaun Marsh (616 runs in 11 matches in 2008) was the first player to receive the honor.
- Virat Kohli holds the record for the most runs scored in a single IPL season (973 in 2016).
- David Warner holds the record for most Orange Cap wins (3).
- Yashasvi Jaiswal (625 runs, 14 innings) scored the highest runs by an uncapped batsman during the 2023 season.
Rules for IPL 2024 Orange Cap
- The Orange Cap is presented to the IPL season’s highest run-scorer.
- The batter who holds the Orange Cap during the season may wear it on the field during games as long as he remains the tournament’s highest scorer.
- In the case that two or more batters are matched on runs, the batsman with the higher strike rate wins the Orange Cap.
- If an opposing batsman surpasses the total of the current Orange Cap bearer, the previous holder is permitted to wear the
- Cap until the end of that specific inning, at which point another batter may surpass him.

List of IPL Orange Cap Winners from 2008 to Present.
Shaun Marsh was the first winner of the Orange Cap. The Australian, who played for the Punjab Kings in the first IPL season, scored 616 runs in the competition. Sachin Tendulkar is the first Indian player to win the IPL’s Orange Cap award. The famous cricketer made 618 runs in 2010.
Chris Gayle is the only player to have won the Orange Cap on two consecutive occasions. The West Indian scored the most runs in the IPL’s 2011 and 2012 seasons. Also, Australian David Warner has won the Orange Cap the most times (three). Other winners include Matthew Hayden, Michael Hussey, Robin Uthappa, Virat Kohli, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Kane Williamson, and KL Rahul.
Ruturaj Gaikwad of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) earned the Orange Cap in the 2021 IPL season. The right-hander scored 635 runs throughout the tournament, with an average of more than 45 and a strike rate of 136.27.
Jos Buttler won the prized trophy for the first time in IPL 2022, earning 863 runs with an average of 57.53 and a strike rate of 149.05. IPL 2024 is scheduled to commence on March 22. The IPL 2024 schedule has been revealed, with the opening game between reigning champions Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Super Kings will be eager to make their mark on the IPL 2024 points table and establish their dominance once again.
